Huskies News And Game Results
January 14th, 2013
It is a new year and a new attitude has come over the Shannon Huskies. The Shannon Huskies finished out 2012 sitting in 3rd place but took a dramatic loss on Dec 21st to the Amherst Colts by the score of 7-6 in their final game before the new year. Over the Christmas and new year break the Huskies sat back and realized that they wanted to start off 2013 with a bang and a new win and dominate attitude and that is exactly how they have started off.
For their first game in 2013, the Shannon Huskies traveled to Liverpool to play the South Shore Wild on Saturday January 5th. The Wild came out swinging in the first period scoring the first goal of the game. It did not take long for the Huskies to strike back and then continue to strike often as they found a way to tame the wild with a 6-1 victory. Leading the way for the Huskies scoring was new addition Jesse Gravel netting a pair of goals, followed by Drew Perkins with racked up a goal and an assist while Captain Brennen Hartling and David Schmidt both added a pair of assists. Matt Calder, new addition Tyler Redden and recently named 2nd team All-Star Defensemen Lee Gaetz all added a goal each in the victory with single assists coming from Greg Capstick, Adam Hendrie, Connor MacKinnon and another new addition to the roster Devin Vanderkooi. Tyler Boudreau was given the start in nets and after the first goal he stood on his head to shut the door for 32 saves and the victory. The Huskies came together in this game and found their groove and set a very nice tone for themselves for the coming months ahead.
Due to scheduling conflicts, the Huskies next game visiting the Chester Clippers was postponed to January 17th setting up for a battle between the Huskies and Clippers on Sunday afternoon at the BMO Center in a match-up that was guaranteed to put every fan and spectator on the edge of their seats for the entire game, and it did not disappoint. The Huskies knew coming into this game that the style of play would almost be like a playoff atmosphere so they prepared well for it and brought more then 110% of themselves ready to go. When you have 2 of the top teams in the league going at it on the same ice surface, you could almost guarantee that both teams would play like there was no season left tomorrow. In a very entertaining, back and forth action packed game, the Huskies scored early and never allowed the Clippers to get their own lead of the game and battled to a hard fought 3-2 victory over the Clippers. Scoring the big goals for the Huskies in this battle fought by the entire team was Jesse Gravel with a single and Matt Calder with a pair. Devin Vanderkooi had 2 assists with Captain Brennen Hartling grabbing a single off one of the prettiest feeds of the season. Goaltender Eric Durand played by far one of the best games the Shannon Huskies have ever seen stopping 27 of the 29 shots he faced and when their were times the Clippers looked as if they were going to score, Durand reached into his bag of tricks and ultimately help the Huskies sink the Clippers ship.
